As a computer hardware technician, your main role is to support and maintain the physical components and peripherals of computer systems in the university. You require a strong understanding of hardware installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of laptops, desktops and other IT devices.
- Continuous Learning: Staying updated with the latest hardware technologies and industry developments through self-study and training.
- Documentation: Keeping detailed records of hardware configurations, repairs, and service history for reference and reporting purposes.
- Equipment Maintenance: Regularly performing maintenance tasks on computer hardware to ensure optimal performance and longevity. This includes cleaning components, checking for dust buildup, and verifying proper ventilation.
- Hardware Installation: You will be responsible for installing and configuring computer hardware components such as motherboards, CPUs, RAM, storage devices, graphics cards, and other peripherals. This involves physically assembling computer systems and ensuring they are set up correctly.
- Hardware Repair: When hardware components fail or become defective, you will need to repair or replace them to restore full functionality. This may involve soldering, reseating components, or replacing entire units.
- Hardware Troubleshooting: When users encounter hardware-related issues, you will diagnose and identify the root causes of the problems. Your expertise in troubleshooting will be crucial in resolving hardware failures, connection issues, and compatibility errors.
- Software Installation: As a hardware technician, you may also assist with installing and configuring operating systems, device drivers, and other software necessary for proper hardware functionality.
- System Upgrades: You will be involved in upgrading computer hardware to improve system performance, increase storage capacity, or meet the requirements of new software or applications.
- Testing and Diagnostics: Conducting hardware tests and using diagnostic tools to identify potential issues before they escalate.
Responsibilities
- Adaptability: Ability to stay updated with new hardware technologies and adapt to changes in the industry.
- Attention to Detail: Being thorough and meticulous when assembling and diagnosing hardware to avoid errors.
- Excellent knowledge in basic electronics: Identification of basic electronic components and a fair knowledge in soldering. Knowing how to use the multimeter would be a plus.
- Knowledge in Data Recovery softwares and techniques
- Knowledge in Operating Systems(Windows, Linux & MacOS)
- Problem Solving: Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to tackle complex hardware-related issues.
- Proficiency in assembling and disassembling of Computer hardware components(desktops, laptops, servers, printers, etc)
- Time Management: Skill in prioritising tasks and managing time effectively, especially in a fast-paced technical support environment.
